Noisy! Nov 20, 2009 I think Able Planet should stop marketing its products using awards and other things. I don't think their headphones really deserve that.
The noise canceling performance is really closer to the worse in the quality scale. Too much hissing, and on top of that, the hissing is not really at a constant level. Something you would expect from the worst quality headphones. So, even if you think it was supposed to be canceling outside noise, the noise the headphone is creating itself is enough to give you a headache.
So if you are lucky and find yourself in an extremely noisy environment(!), then, you can ignore the hissing. But, do you really want to use this headphone for such purpose?
My suggestion, instead spending money on this one, spend twice more and buy Audio Technica, or something that deserves high praises. Definitely not this one. And after my experience with most of the Able Planet headphones, I think, it is safe to say, they don't have the engineers capable enough to achieve noise canceling and get rid of extremely high level of hissing at the same time.
Since I don't suggest the headphone, it may not be a good idea to discuss the sound quality, but if you enjoy listening music at high volume, then you can get some satisfactory quality for the audio quality. But, since you cannot use it for longer periods, I don't think that matters a lot.

Saved my ears. Oct 26, 2009 Recently took a flight and sat near the engines. After 2 hours of that I felt that I'd lost 50% of my hearing for good. I had tried to watch a dvd to no avail. Despite having the volume maxed outI could not hear the DVD well enough to continue to watch it. This was with Sony MDR-150 on the ear headphones which sound pretty good anywhere but on a plane.
When my next flight came up I decided to get better headphones. I ordered the Able Planet True Fidelity headphones and used them on my last trip. Instead of having the system volume set at 16, I had set it to 3!
As these are over the ear headphones, they reduced the sound from the plane a large amount even without the NC turned on, but mostly the upper end noise was reduced and the engine noise was still fairly intrusive. I should say that at that point I could have easily watched the DVD, and my first impression was "wow! these help alot".
Turning NC on dropped the noise level down another 50%. I could still hear noise around me, but it was very subdued. Subdued enough that I could not hear the stewardess ask me what I wanted to drink. This was while just using the NC, not watching a movie or listening to music.
I'm impressed, I wont travel again without a set of NC Headphones again.

The first thing I pack! Apr 21, 2009 I had done a great deal of research before purchasing NC headphones for a trip overseas. When I called Able Planet they gave me a description of the their product differences. I chose these because when I listen to my stereo I like a little more bass, these headphones deliver! The NC saved my brain and ears on the long flight but also gave me great enjoyment from my movie and music! LOVE THESE! When I travel - these are the first thing I pack!

Poor sound quality May 15, 2008 I purchased the headphones with the expectation of getting noise cancelling and a decent sound quality for a reasonable price. The noise cancelling worked satisfying but the sound quality of the item I recieved was so poor, that I could not see myself using them even for walk around or on a plane, and certainly not for concentrated music listening. The treble level was unacceptably low and even worse when the noise cancelling was on. If I cranked the treble level by use of equalizer, the headphones could play it, but it required a macabre level of equalizer adjustments.
I returned the item claiming it was defect, and bought a pair of AKG 271S, which I enjoy 100% though they are without noise cancelling. As I understand the Able Planet Linx system, it is supposed to increase the treble level, thereby minimize the risk of hearing damage due to the use of headphones, because the increased treble level automatically makes the listener turn down the volume.... Maybe I get it wrong, but that does not make a whole lot of sense to me in terms og quality listening, because it intentionally shifts the frequency balance so to speak. Anyway, it seems to be a patented system, so there might be some reason it it. Bottom line, I don't know whether my headphones was defect because I have not had the chance to compare them with others.

LOVE THEM! Apr 30, 2008 The best buy for the price. I did a lot of research prior to purchasing my pair of Noise Cancelling Headphones. These had the best reviews from sites like Forbes, PCWorld, MacWorld the Washington Post. There were a few others too, I just don't remember.
They are very comfortable and the music works when the batteries run out. I fly a lot and these have been a life saver. Much better than the Bose Q2's I had, which broke after a year.
